So you just got your dream color and you don’t want it to fade, try these 9 things to help your color last as long as possible!

1. Wait to shampoo

It is best to wait 24-48 hours before you shampoo post color service. This allows the hair to naturally neutralize. After that try spacing out your shampoos a litte. The more you shampoo the more likely you are to fade. It is important to shampoo when your scalp feels dirty and not less than once a week. Your sytlist will be able to help you determine a shampoo schedule that works for you!

2.Use the right shampoo and conditioner

Many over-the-counter products contain salts, sulfates and detergents. That’s why they are so inexpensive. These ingredient strip hair color out! Your sylist has prescribed using a specific shampoo and conditioner because these products have been formulated to work with the color that we used on you today. These products are made with the highest quality ingredients and will prolong your color results while keeping your hair shinny and healthy. We can not guarentee the longevity of our color work without the use of the products that we recommend.

3.Salon maintenance is important

Just as important as haircare, making sure you keep up on your haircolor maintenance is key to preserving the haircolor that you want. Haircolor (even permanent) will not last forever and it needs to be maintained on a regualar basis. All over color will need to be maintained every 4-5 weeks and highlights will need to be maintained every 6-12 weeks depending on the positioning of the highlights. The gloss that we tone the hair with has a shelf life of 6-8 weeks. We are happy to help you figure out a maintenance schedule that fits your lifestyle and hair needs. Even if you feel like your color looks good leading up to your appointment, pushing off your appointment can have negative effects on reaching and maintaning your haircolor goals.

4.Skip the super hot water

Super hot water will open the cuticle layer of the hair and lead to faster fading, unless you have a vivid or rainbow color hair, you do not have to have cold water just not scalding hot water

5.No Clarifying shampoos

Ever wondered why your friend’s hair (or maybe even your own) suddenly turned orange? If it’s color-treated, a clarifying shampoo could be to blame. Clairifying shampoos strip the hair, over the counter dandruff shampoo can do the same thing.

6.Lower the heat on your tools

Like Super hot water, your hot tools will open the cuticle layer of the hair and lead to faster fading, Lower the tempurature of your tools, 365* is the standard tempurature for most hair types, but if your hair is fine, you will want to drop it even more.

7.Sun is not your friend

Uv rays will not only fade out your hair but it will also cause damage to your hair, Uv rays break down the bonds in the hair and cause fading and weakness. When possible wear a hat and use products recommended to you by your stylist with UV protection

8.Swimming will fade your hair

Salt water and Chlorine are very hard on your hair and will lead to fading. If you do decide to go swimming wet your hair with tap water and apply a generous amount of a leave-in conditoner. This will fill the hair with leave-in and help keep the salt or chlorine from penetrating into the hair as deep

9.Hard water can cause fading

You can do everything right but still experience fading and brassiness, in many situations, this is caused by metals in the water( hard water) . Hard water minerals, such as iron and magnesium, can also cause hair to look dull or discolored. This is because minerals can build-up on the hair and react with hair color, causing it to fade or change. The key is not to leave these minerals and chemicals on your hair. If this is happening to you talk to your stylist about Metal Detox. You can also get a filter for your shower!
